Wedding Photography in Unpredictable Colorado Weather

It’s June in Colorado and that means 90 degree days and 40 degree nights. It also means that any kind of weather can alter your wedding day plans. We have just had a week of rain and also several weddings in that week. Fortunately the brides and grooms didn’t let a little inclement weather dampen their celebrations. As Denver wedding photographers, we are very experienced in adjusting our wedding photography to “Plan B” because of weather. We often go to the lee side of a building to avoid high wind, or under big trees or a porch to stay out of the rain. Many times the photographs we do under “Plan B” are more interesting than “Plan A”.

The perfect example is Sarah & Hunter’s wedding at The Omni Interlocken in Broomfield, located just outside of Denver. Fortunately we had taken most of the formal photos before the ceremony because as the ceremony was ending a storm approached and the wind strengthened. However, we still drove over to a nearby lake for some extra formals.

Just as we returned to the resort the skies opened up; 30 minutes of rain and hail followed as the efficient staff of the Omni scurried to keep the water out of the pavilion.

60 minutes after that, as the guests were finishing dinner, the sun broke through and delighted us all with a stunning rainbow.

Scouting Wedding Venues

Hi there, Sherri here. Wedding season is here for real. Bill & I will be providing wedding photography for dozens of couples in Denver this summer. We have photographed weddings at many locations along the Denver Front Range but every year we have a few weddings scheduled at venues we haven’t been to. So we always go scout the new locations a week or two before the event. We want to see the venue with the trees and foliage in season. We also try to look at the location about the same time of day as the wedding ceremony. Being familiar with your wedding location is just part of the service we provide to our clients. We can pre-plan formal photos so we are very efficient and quick on your wedding day. Your wedding photography is important to us too and we don’t want any bad surprises at the venue. Here are a few shots from a scouting trip to the First Avenue Presbyterian Church in Denver, along with a couple of photos from Kate & Mark’s wedding day.

Avery House in Fort Collins

The Avery House, located in Fort Collins about an hour outside of Denver, is another venue that we enjoy for wedding photography. The property, which includes the house, gazebo, fountain and carriage house are a historic landmark.

The house was built by in 1879 by Franklin Avery, the founder of First National Bank. Mr. Avery, his wife, Sara, and their three children lived in the house and added on to it over the years. In 1974, it was purchased and restored by the Poudre Landmarks Foundation, Inc. The house, along with the carriage house, can now be reserved for weddings and receptions.

The couple featured in the photographs below had a summer wedding at the Avery House. As you can see, the grounds are beautiful and provide an intimate setting. This ceremony was held in the yard, which can accommodate 150 guests. Smaller ceremonies with a maximum of 30 guests can be held in the Avery House. There is also a house conveniently located across the street that is used for dressing and lodging.

Red Rock Amphitheatre near Denver

The Red Rocks Event Center, located just 15 miles west of downtown Denver, offers unique wedding photography opportunities. Red Rocks is the only natural, open-air amphitheatre in the world. The 300 million year old amphitheatre is an extraordinary wedding venue offering astounding acoustics and breathtaking views.

At Sherri Barber Photography, we look for untraditional scenes and were to find many among the 2,300-foot rocks at the Red Rocks Event Center. The wedding photographs below were taken at Red Rocks Event Center in the fall. The couple had their ceremony outside the visitor center followed by a reception in the main dining room. As you can see, we were able to capture both posed and unposed moments for truly memorable wedding photographs.

If you would like a wedding photographer who can find untraditional scenes and capture the emotional, authentic moments of your special day, contact Sherri Barber Photography serving the greater Denver area. We offer a variety of wedding photography packages to meet your needs and budget.

Arrowhead Golf Course in Littleton, Colorado

The Arrowhead Golf Club is located in Littleton, Colorado just outside of Denver. This location offers unique wedding photography opportunities. The ancient red sandstone rocks that peak above the golf course are majestic and offer a beautiful backdrop for the ceremony that can also be enjoyed during the reception.

Weddings are typically held at the outdoor circular ceremony site and are followed by a reception in the Roxborough Banquet Room. However, some couples choose to have their reception in the Tent Pavilion, in which case the ceremony will usually be held on the practice range.

The Roxborough Room can accomodate 150 guests, and the adjoining covered patio can hold an additional 30. For larger parties, the clubhouse restaurant can also be rented out and will hold another 60 guests. The other option, the Tent Pavilion can accomodate 180 guests.

If there is bad weather on the day of your wedding and you planned to have an outdoor ceremony, the ceremony can be moved indoors to either the banquet room or the tent. Both locations offer views of the golf course with its red rock landscape so you will still have a beautiful backdrop.

We’ve included some pictures below from a wedding we photographed at the Arrowhead Golf Course just outside of Denver. During the ceremony, a storm was threatening and made for some memorable wedding photographs. Just as the wedding concluded the clouds opened up and the rain came. Fortunately, we had done most of the formal portraits before the ceremony.

If you like the photography you see here, consider Sherri Barber Photography for your wedding. We serve the Denver area and provide a wide range of wedding photography services.
