Wedding Photography Samples and Your Actual Wedding Photos – Will They Be Consistent?

Hi, everyone. Sherri here.

Recently I was looking at some other wedding photographers’ websites and something occurred to me: It can be difficult to get a feel for a photographer’s style from a small selection of samples on a website. This even goes for me, and I’m a photographer!

Both Bill and I are very serious about our responsibility to our customers. One of our first priorities is to ensure that the wedding coverage we deliver is consistent with our wedding photography samples. We want you to see as much of our wedding coverage as possible before you entrust us with capturing your wedding day memories. While we do show individual photos on our website (our greatest hits), we prefer to show off individual wedding albums when we visit with wedding photography clients.

We also show couples proof books of actual weddings. This is a bit like showing you how a magic trick is done. Bill and I want you to see everything we do so you know how we operate. Most photographers are only willing to show their greatest hits, but their greatest hits are often completely retouched and custom printed.

Lots of pretty individual wedding photos are not representative of the overall coverage you are purchasing from a wedding photographer. Insist on seeing samples from entire weddings. In fact, insist on seeing samples of single weddings from the photographer that will be at your wedding, such as family portraits and reception photos.

Some photography studios employ numerous photographers and apprentices to shoot weddings. We photograph every wedding personally, so you are assured of consistency between our samples and our actual wedding coverage.

A good wedding photographer should create several great sample photos at every wedding he or she works at. However, I should note that it is unrealistic to expect every photograph of your wedding to be “magazine cover” quality. It is realistic, though, to expect that each wedding photo will look great and capture the emotions and excitement of that day.

Of the more than 1,000 photos we take at every wedding we attend, about 500-600 are delivered to you in your proof book and digital negative CD. You can then choose about 50-100 to be printed into your customized wedding book. The very best of those wedding photos are worthy of large display prints and are certainly “magazine cover” quality.
