Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI)

Viva Las Vegas! Bill and I just returned from a week in Las Vegas, Nevada where we attended the annual Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) convention. Now, Bill and I don’t party much and we don’t gamble at all, but Las Vegas is where the WPPI convention is held each winter.

We belong to the WPPI and we attend these annual conventions because we find them essential. It’s a major way for us to keep up with trends in wedding coverage and wedding photography, and it also gives us a chance to meet our suppliers in person, which is always great.

So after several days of business meetings, industry seminars, and giving the trade show a good long look, Bill and I spent a couple of days relaxing. There was the obligatory shopping for a new bag and shoes, lounging by the pool, and we saw the Cirque du Soleil show Ka.

Bill and I rode around on the monorail, saw the new mirrored horse statue at Bellagio, and enjoyed a fancy dinner with our friends Tony & Donna Smith from Billings, Montana.

We had a fantastic trip and we’re ready to begin our best wedding season ever!

The Equipment We Use: Telephoto Lenses

Back again with some more information on the equipment that Bill and I use when we cover weddings. Like I’ve mentioned before, we have been doing wedding photography in Northern Colorado for some time now, so we’ve got some preferences for equipment and gear we use for each shoot.

Previously we discussed the digital cameras we use for wedding photography. Here we’ll discuss some other equipment we use for taking wedding photographs.

Telephoto Lenses

We use Nikon lenses because of their consistency and reliability. Bill and I both have strong backgrounds in newspaper, magazine, and sports photography, so we own several telephoto lenses. These allow us to capture close up photos from a long distance.

In other words, when we’re at your wedding, we won’t run up to you or your guests and stick our cameras in your face. I’m sure you’ve seen those guys. We will help you pose for formal portraits, but during the rest of your wedding celebration, we will stay out of the way. Your wedding is about you, not about us.

We’ll have one last bit of information (at least for now) on our gear in a future post. But in the meantime, we encourage you to view our wedding photography gallery to sample the quality we bring to our wedding coverage. You can also sample the numerous wedding celebration photos on our blog.

The Equipment We Use: Digital Cameras

Bill and I have been doing wedding photography in Northern Colorado for some time now, and we’ve developed our preferences for equipment and gear we use for each shoot. So for you tech types out there, here’s a rundown of some of the gear that we use when covering weddings.

Digital Cameras

It was only five years ago that Bill and I stopped using film cameras and made the switch over to digital. It was at that time we finally felt that digital cameras finally matched the quality you could get from a film camera. Now, digital technology has far surpassed film, which allows us to document the events of your wedding in more ways than we could imagine.

Bill and I use the latest Nikon D3 and D700 digital cameras, both of which are 12 megapixel. The great advantage of these cameras is their ability to shoot great photos in low light without the use of a flash. This means that during your wedding ceremony, at the reception, and in other quiet moments, Bill and I can work virtually undetected.

We’ll have some more information on our gear in upcoming blog posts. In the meantime, we encourage you to browse our wedding photography gallery to sample the quality we bring to our wedding coverage. You can also sample the numerous wedding celebration photos on our blog.
